토니(Tony Manero: 존 트라볼타 분)는 브루클린 이태리인 지역에 사는 청년이다. 아버지가 여러달째 실직 중이라 토니는 마을 페인트 가게에서 일해 생활비를 보태는 처지다. 토니의 유일한 낙은 주말 저녁 디스코텍에 가서 춤을 추는 것이다. 춤을 잘 추는 토니는 그곳에서 귀빈 대접을 받는다. 거스(Gus: 브루스 온스타인 분), 조이(Joey: 조셉 칼리 분), 더블제이(Double J: 폴 페이프 분), 바비(Bobby C.: 베리 밀러 분)는 토니의 친구다. 애넷(Annette: 도나 페스코 분)이라는 아가씨도 토니를 좋아해서 그를 따라 다닌다. 이들에게는 경제적으로 어렵다는 점 말고도 이웃 스페인계 마을 청년들과 늘 싸워야 한다는 문제가 있다. 거스가 거리에서 스페인 아이들에게 몰매를 맞아 병원 침대에 눕게 되자, 나머지 친구들은 복수할 기회만을 노리며 스페인 패거리들의 아지트를 감시한다. 그러나 디스코텍에서 춤을 출 때면 그런 문제들이 다 잊혀진다. 그날도 토니는 디스코텍에 갔다가 춤 잘 추는 스테파니(Stephanie: 카렌 린 고니 분)를 보게 된다. 그녀가 한때 돈많은 맨해턴 남자와 동거를 한 적이 있다는 사실을 토니가 알게 되어 두 사람은 한바탕 말다툼을 벌이지만, 그렇게 싸우고 화해하는 과정에서 둘은 은연 중에 좀더 마음이 통하는 사이가 된다. 디스코 경연대회에 출전하여 토니와 스테파니는 일등을 하게 된다.
