퇴학을 당해 집으로 돌아온 '마일스' 대저택의 밖을 한번도 나가본 적 없는 '플로라' 대저택의 마지막 주인이 된 두 아이의 새로운 가정교사 '케이트' 대대로 집안을 보살핀 가정부 '그로스' 부인은 '케이트'에게 알 수 없는 말로 아이들을 소개한다.  "이 아이들은 특별해요"  낯선 환경, 기묘한 분위기의 아이들 그리고 발견된 이전 가정교사 '제슬'의 일기까지 '케이트'는 아이들을 만난 후부터 매일 밤 악몽에 시달리는데…  "나쁜 꿈꿨어요?"
