팝 음악 작곡가인 에드워드 젠슨과 대학 교수 자격 시험 중에 있는 에스페라 발렌타인(Valentine : 소피 마르소 분)은 스키장에서 우연히 만나 사랑에 빠진다. 에드워드는 그녀를 위해서 노래를 작곡해 바치기도 하면서 두 사람의 사랑은 깊어가는데 조그만 오해들이 쌓이면서 그들의 갈등은 표면화된다. 그리고 마지막 관문인 구두 시험을 보는 발렌타인은 시험 문제로 몰리에르의 사랑을 받아들었다. 거기에 대해서 구술을 해야한 것이다. 그때 시험장에 와있는 에드워드를 발견한다. 그를 본 발렌띠는 문제에 대한 답변으로 자신의 사랑에 대한 생각을 눈물을 흘리면서 말한다. 결국 그녀는 합격하고 에드워드와도 화해하게 되고 그들의 사랑도 익어간다. 이때 캐롤라인 크루거가 부르는 주제가가 흘러나온다.
