명나라 가정 연간, 내각 수보대신 하언은 황제를 모독했다는 모함을 받아 파직 당한다. 하언의 아들인 금의위 하붕은 이 사건을 조사하다 기괴하고 파란만장한 음모에 휘말리게 된다. 요사스러운 남자, 사나운 외국인 해적, 사람을 조종하는 인형 등을 차례로 상대해 나가던 하붕은 결국 밝혀진 사건의 진상 앞에 진퇴양난의 처지에 빠지고 마는데...
