미국 뉴잉글랜드 지방의 소도시. 평범한 아빠로서 크리스마스 신봉자인 스티브의 생활은, 야심만만한 물질숭배자 버디의 가족이 옆집으로 이사오면서 큰 혼란을 겪게 된다. 버디는 크리스마스를 맞이하여 우주에서도 볼 수 있는, 지구상에서 가장 큰 전등 장식을 계획하고, 집이 터질 듯이 장식들을 들여놓는다. 이에 스티브는 버디의 계획을 못하게 하거나, 아니면 그를 앞지를 크리스마스 장식을 하겠다고 결심하는데.
